How to snow foam properly: the pre-wash that saves your paint
Dilution, dwell time and the three mistakes that make snow foam pointless. A practical guide for valeters and enthusiasts using Nerta Snow Foam and Xtreme Foam Deluxe.

Snow foam is the step most people do for the photo and least people do for the paint. Done right, it lifts the grit that would otherwise be dragged across the panel by your wash mitt. Done wrong, it is an expensive way to make a driveway slippery.
What snow foam actually does
A pre-wash foam has two jobs. First, it wets and softens dried-on traffic film so it releases from the surface. Second, it holds that dirt in suspension long enough for you to rinse it off before you touch the car. The thickness of the foam matters far less than the chemistry and the dwell time. Thick foam that slides off in thirty seconds has not done anything.
Dilution that works
For a standard foam lance with a 1 L bottle, start with 50 ml of Nerta Snow Foam topped up with warm water. That is roughly 1:20. If the vehicle is heavily soiled, go to 100 ml (1:10). Turn the lance’s air mixture down a touch rather than up: you want a wet, clinging foam, not shaving cream.
In a pressure washer injector or foam arch, run 1–3 % depending on the system. For a touchless result on neglected vehicles, swap to the alkaline Sky WE 64 at 2–5 % and let the chemistry do the work.
The method
- Work in the shade on a cool panel. Foam that dries on a hot bonnet leaves marks and stops working.
- Rinse heavy mud first. Foam is for film, not clods.
- Foam bottom-up. Starting low gives the dirtiest areas the longest dwell and stops foam streaking down a clean panel.
- Dwell 3–5 minutes. Watch the sills: when the foam has gone translucent and the dirt is running, it is time.
- Rinse top-down at a 45° angle so you are pushing the dirt off, not into the trim.
Then do your contact wash. If the mitt comes out of the bucket almost clean, the foam did its job.
Three mistakes we see every week
- Too much product. More foam does not clean better, it just costs more and rinses longer. Measure it.
- Letting it dry. Five minutes on a cool car, not fifteen on a warm one.
- Skipping the rinse. Foam that is still on the paint when you start washing is foam you are now grinding in.
Which foam for which job
| Situation | Product | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly maintenance, coated or waxed car | Snow Foam | pH neutral, safe on protection |
| Winter salt, neglected daily driver | Xtreme Foam Deluxe | Mild acidic shampoo, cuts mineral film |
| Vans and HGVs with heavy traffic film | Active Diamond Foam | Alkaline, powerful on film |
| Touchless or two-step wash | Sky WE 64 | Alkaline pre-wash for arches and lances |
