Shampoo & Wax or pH-neutral shampoo: which one do you actually need?
The honest difference between a wash-and-wax shampoo and a pure neutral shampoo, when each one makes sense, and how much to put in the bucket.

Every valeter has been asked by a customer whether the “wax” in a shampoo and wax product does anything. The honest answer is yes, a bit, and whether that bit is what you want depends on what else is on the paint.
pH-neutral shampoo
A neutral shampoo such as Nerta Blue Diamond is designed to do one thing: lubricate the surface so your mitt glides over it without scratching, while lifting the light dirt that the pre-wash left behind. It adds nothing and strips nothing. That makes it the right choice for:
- Vehicles with a ceramic coating or a quality sealant you want to preserve.
- Detailers who apply their own protection as a separate step.
- Anyone who wants maximum slickness in the bucket and a predictable, additive-free result.
Dilution: 20–30 ml per 10 L bucket. A 5 L can is roughly 200 washes.
Shampoo & Wax
Shampoo & Wax carries a small amount of carnauba and synthetic wax in the formula. As you wash, a thin layer is left on the paint. It beads water, adds gloss and makes drying easier. It is not a substitute for a proper wax or coating, but it tops up existing protection and makes an unprotected car look better. The right choice for:
- Maintenance washes on cars that have a wax finish.
- Mobile valeters doing volume work where a separate wax step is not in the price.
- Daily drivers that never see a polishing machine.
Dilution: 30–50 ml per 10 L bucket.
What about coated cars?
If a car has a ceramic coating, use the neutral shampoo. Wax additives can sit on top of a coating and mask its water behaviour, which annoys customers who paid for it. If you want to add gloss and beading to a coated car in the wash, use a dedicated ceramic spray such as Hydro Ceramic Wax at the rinse stage instead.
Brush and automatic washes
Neither of the above is designed for brush washing. For hand car washes and truck washes running brushes, use a high-foaming brush shampoo such as Super Wash or Duo Polish Shampoo, which are formulated for lubrication under a brush and dosed at 0.3–2 % through an injector.
The two-bucket method in thirty seconds
- Pre-wash and rinse the vehicle first (see our snow foam guide).
- Bucket one: shampoo and warm water. Bucket two: clean water with a grit guard.
- Load the mitt in bucket one, wash one panel top-down, rinse the mitt in bucket two, repeat.
- Rinse the car, dry with a plush towel or air, and apply any protection.
Our recommendation
Most mobile valeters we supply run both: Blue Diamond as the default and Shampoo & Wax for customers who want the “shiny and beading” result without paying for a wax. Both come in 1 L, 5 L and 25 L. Ask Mati for a trade price on the pair.
